City Deep Sky General Policies

Just some rules to govern how things work here.

  1. It's my sandbox. This means that though this is a wiki, I reserve the right of ultimate editorial control. I host this on a machine I own and operate so I have the ultimate say on what happens here. That being said productive input is welcome and encouraged.
  2. I determine what is on the canonical list of objects. I will listen to arguments for and against a particular object and make a decision from there. I will also take into account the following:
    • How experienced an observer you are. More experience gives more weight to a suggestion, though lack of experience will not necessarily disqualify a suggestion.
    • The type of equipment you are using. If you're using 10x150 binoculars or a C14, you will be able to see more than the basis of the list, those being 10x50 binoculars and a small (5"-6"ish) telescope.
    • The size of city you live in. This is a list of objects visible from the light polluted environs of large cities. If you live in a village of 20 with one streetlight you will obviously see fainter objects than someone who lives in a city of 1 million.
    • The number of supporting observations. If multiple people living in large cities see an object, there's a greater chance of inclusion on the canonical list. If I can see it as well that helps a bunch too.
  3. In order to edit articles in the wiki, you need to have confirmed your email address. This is to slow down spammers as well as to help prevent wikivandalism. You do not have to be registered to view the wiki, only edit it. Also see our privacy policy.
  4. Be polite. This is a hobby for me, and I would guess most people here, there is no need to become abusive or threatening. Behaviour like this will result in account termination and possible IP blocking.
  5. Spamming, commercial advertising and wikivandalism are forbidden.
  6. Violation of policy may result in account termination.
  7. If there is any dispute over policy, refer to Rule #1.
